Updated December 11, 2024

Today, I will share some powerful New Year’s rituals and exercises to manifest your best life in 2025. These rituals and practices align you with your True authentic Self, paving the way for you to connect with all parts of you, the Universe, and become your most magnetic and empowered self. You probably already do some of these, but I will show you these rituals from a different perspective, through the lens of Internal Family Systems. I hope to inspire you to have your most magnetic 2025. So, let’s get into it!

New Year’s is my favorite holiday! The hopefulness of new beginnings really resonates with me. Each year, I spend time before the new year to explore how I want the year ahead to look and feel like.

I examine what I want to ask the Universe to help me bring in the coming year. What is in alignment with me, my True Self and not my ego (which is a part, BTW. More on that later!).

Because of this, I have created and adopted rituals that I do either on New Year’s Eve or during the week leading up to NYE, leaving the last one for New Year’s Eve. This is so that I can head into the new year intuitively and with intention. To unlock possibilities. To elevate my manifestations. In the weeks before the new year, I begin to reflect, contemplate, and tune in to prepare to let go of the past year and move forward, ready, for the new year.

New Year’s Rituals- Align with Your Authentic True Self

By doing these rituals, I am aligning with my True Self aka: my intuition, so that I can tune into my authentic wants and needs, and tune into the Universe.

Aligning with True Self connects us with the Universe, and we must be connected to the Universe to manifest!

You might be asking yourself,

How do I know I am in True Self?

According to Internal Family Systems (IFS), we look for the 8 C’s to tell us if we have tapped into True Self or not. We do not need all 8 at a time, just one will do. The 8 C’s are:

Curiosity

Creativity

Compassion

Confidence

Clarity

Courage

Calmness

Connectedness

In other words, are you feeling open? Open to possibilities? Open to what is coming up for you at this moment?

Journal Questions

Can you think of a time where you felt any one of the 8 C’s?

When was the last time you were curious about something?

Felt confident? Creative?

Felt a sense of calmness come over you?

This is True Self!

Can you remember that feeling? Can you recreate it? Align with it?  What would you need to do to do this?

How to Align With Your True Self

Now, I want you to get quiet for a few moments, taking 3 deep, cleansing breaths.

Think about that time you felt like you were in True Self, really notice it. Notice how you were feeling. What do you notice in your body? Can you feel it again right now?

What does it feel like? Maybe you feel relaxed? Or you noticed less tension in your body? Maybe a little tingly? Possibly less “noise” in your mind? This is True Self!

**This feeling. This energy shift you feel when in True Self. This is you getting in tune with the Universe. This is where the magic happens!**

New Year’s Rituals- Word Of The Year

For the past few years, I’ve began a New Year’s ritual of choosing a word of the year.

You’ve probably heard of this. This could even be something you already do!

The power of a single word can keep us on track, focused, and motivate us.

And that’s the thing, that word has power. If we choose to let it have power. If we are intentional with choosing the word. Just like the words we use every day, language has power. We have the opportunity to choose our words with intention.

Why focus on a single word?

I like to think of my word of the year as my beginning point. My framework for what I want to bring in. What I want to co-create with the Universe. It’s the “big picture” look at what I want to focus on in my life for the coming year. This is why I think that a word of the year is a powerful New Year’s ritual.

To choose a word, take a moment to get into True Self.

Notice the shift of energy.

Now, ask yourself what do I want to bring in this coming year?

-Or-

What do I need to be open to?

-Or-

What do I need in this coming year?

Choose the question that calls to you most or choose your own!

Then just listen. The word might pop right into your mind. Or it could take a little time. If it doesn’t come right up for you, that’s okay! It might pop in later. Suddenly, you might notice that you are hearing a specific word over and over again. Just notice any clues, any nudges from the Universe. You’ll know when you’ve found it.

Once you have your word of the year, write it down. Put it somewhere you can see it. A great idea is to make your word of the year as a wallpaper on your phone.

**I created 20+ Canva wallpaper templates for FREE! You can get them here! Many of these templates were created by me as collages and used as template backgrounds. I hope that you’re inspired by the imagery, further expanding you with your word of the year! **

If a phone wallpaper isn’t your thing, then write it on paper and pin it somewhere. Get creative with it! Use colored pens, markers, stickers, make it on your computer and print it out! Whatever way you feel called to do this, do!

New Year’s Rituals- Intention Setting

A favorite New Year’s ritual of mine is setting intentions.

You might be asking, “but Angel, what’s the difference between an intention and a resolution?”

The difference is a resolution is focused on fixing a part of you that you are not happy with. It’s centered around what you perceive is wrong with you and you are resolving to fix it. With the focus being more negative towards us.

Examples of resolutions are:

I will exercise more. I will lose weight. Get organized. Eat better. See how they focus on what is “wrong” with you?

An intention, on the other hand, doesn’t imply that there is something that needs to be fixed. Instead, it focuses on where you would like to see yourself. It creates abundance in your life without having to go down the “rabbit hole” of what’s “wrong” with me that needs fixing.

Examples of intentions are:

I intend to have a healthy relationship with my body, mind, and soul. I intend to be in tune with the moment. Or, I intend to praise progress and forget perfection.

See the difference with the two?

Getting deeper into this, resolutions are derived from the parts of you that think you need “fixed” for whatever reasons. These reasons could be because you want to be loved, feel deserving, societal or family pressures, or be accepted. To name a few reasons.

Intentions are derived from True Self. True Self doesn’t focus on the negative aspects of ourselves. That’s because, True Self doesn’t care about societal of family pressures. True Self already feels deserving, worthy, accepted. True Self wants you to succeed and live an abundant life.

Intentions are manifestations. And powerful ones at that. This is because they are in alignment with True Self!

to Set Intentions

To your New Year’s ritual of setting intentions you will again take a few minutes aligning with your True Self. Take a few cleansing deep breaths, and as you do imagine with each inhale you are connecting more and more with your body, and every exhale you are releasing any tension or tightness you notice in your body. With each breath, you are getting more and more into a relaxed state.

Now, consider your word of the year.

What does this evoke in you?

How can you expand on this in the form of an intention?

             -Or-

What do you want to cultivate in your life this upcoming year?

When you think of an intention:

What would this feel like?

What would it look like?

How would your life be different if you felt this way?

Really notice how this feels in your body, the emotions this evokes in you. Sit with these feelings to really help your mind understand that it is possible. These intentions you are setting can happen and will happen!

A few more examples of intentions to inspire you!

I intend to embrace change and vulnerability

Or-

I intend to work with the peace of mind that I am loved regardless of the outcome

I intend to live in the moment without worrying about the past or future

Or-

I intend to live with more compassion for myself and others

Now it’s your turn!

Align with your True Self and create a couple or a few intentions that resonate with you and how you would like to manifest your life in the coming year! Let your intentions help guide your decisions and thought processes.

Put your intentions on paper, document, note app, something, so that you can see them as reminders throughout the year as well.

Review What You’ve Done So Far

Let’s recap our New Year’s rituals real quick! So far, you’ve learned how to align with your True Self with the help of the journal prompts. (which is where the magic happens!). You chose your word of the year and put it as your phone wallpaper (don’t forget about the free Canva phone wallpaper templates at the end of this post!) or somewhere else to remind you. And, set your intentions for the year ahead!

Take a minute to tune in and see how it feels to accomplish those first three things.

What’s coming up?

Are you noticing a feeling of calmness? possibly relaxed? Or excited?

Maybe there’s a little voice in there saying something to the effect of “why do you need to give yourself credit for this?”.

Is there something inside perhaps giving some pushback?

This could look like “I don’t have time for this” or “I need to do x, y, and z, before I can even think about spending a few minutes on this thing”. Maybe you hear that this is a “waste of time”?

Just take a moment and notice what it is that is coming up for you right now.

Don’t try to dismiss it, avoid it, or push it away. Instead, get curious about it.

What is it saying?

What feelings do these thoughts evoke?

This is a part

It’s a part of you. Just like you have True Self, you have parts. We all have parts.

This does not mean there is anything wrong with you. Just to be clear, noticing that you have parts isn’t the same as having a mental health disorder like dissociative identity disorder (DID) or what it used to be known as, Multiple Personality Disorder. It is absolutely normal to have parts. It’s just another way to explain aspects of our personality. But you will notice parts getting in the way of your New Year’s rituals, for various reasons.

I find that the sooner we embrace our parts, all of our parts, the easier it is to shift into living an authentic life that is in alignment with our True Self and the Universe. I wrote a blog post called Self-Sabotage and Manifestation that gets more in depth about our parts. You can read the full article here. But here’s an excerpt:

“Using an Internal Family Systems (IFS) parts perspective lens, our self-sabotaging behaviors are parts of us. These parts took on new jobs or roles in our childhood as a reaction to what we were dealing with at the time. Our parts have positive intentions. For example, if a caregiver was critical of us, a part of us will take on this role. the intention is to “keep us in line” to try to mitigate the caregiver being critical of us. Or another example, the people pleaser part. This part most likely came about out of fear of rejection, abandonment, or insecurities, that it picked up earlier in life.”

what do we do with this? And what does it have to do with manifestation?

Through my years as a therapist and in my personal explorations of manifestation, I found that the key to manifesting is being in our worth. And to be in our worth, we need to be aligned with our True Self. This way, we can be in alignment with the Universe. Often times though, when our parts take on new jobs or roles to help us, what they are doing is also diminishing our self-worth. It’s not their intention, at all! Which is why we must work with these parts while in True Self to break these patterns and cycles getting in the way of our worth, and manifesting.

These New Year’s rituals align you and work with with your True Self energy. Our True Self feels inherently worthy. It isn’t concerned with or worried about past programming, conditioning, limiting beliefs, invisible scripts. These are the things our parts worry about. And these are the things that impact our self-worth. This can look like perfectionism, our egos, people pleasing, that inner critic, anxiety, and so on.

We cannot get rid of parts. They don’t go away. They are just as important as True Self. We can however, ask the parts to unblend.

What it means to be blended with a part

I like to use the analogy that when a part is blended, it is kicking us out of the room and barricading the door shut. We don’t feel like we are in control.

It’s a flood of thoughts, feelings, body sensations.

Think about the last time you felt anger, anxiety, or guilt. What did it feel like? What were the emotions? the thoughts? What were you feeling in your body? What did you do because of this? Did you say something you later regretted? Did you do something that you didn’t want to because you felt guilty? Or did you say “yes” when you really wanted to say “no”?

What if you could make space between those feelings? The thoughts and body sensations? This is what unblending from a part means! And it’s really quite simple.

First, it’s important to notice and have awareness of what is going on inside. To be connected to ourselves.

As a society, we are very disconnected from our bodies, and from many of our emotions. This is especially true with women.

New Year’s Rituals- Reconnect With Yourself

I say this is a New Year’s ritual, but really it is something that would be powerful to do any time of year.

This means checking in on yourself throughout the day to see what is going on for you.

Take a couple of deep, cleansing breaths, then ask yourself: What am I feeling? What am I thinking? What body sensations are coming up?

Such as any tightness, tension, restlessness, etc.

By doing this, you are gaining awareness of how these three things are connected. And in turn you are reconnecting to yourself! Practice this 2-3 times a day so that you can become more aware of what is going on inside your internal world.

As you become more aware of what is going on inside, you can begin to determine what part is taking over.

How To Unblend From A Part

This isn’t quite a New Year’s ritual, but it is an incredibly powerful practice! When you notice a part taking over, you are going to acknowledge it by saying something to the effect of, “I see you” or “I feel you”. Thank it for coming up. Our parts love to be acknowledged, validated, and thanked! Then let the part know that you can handle whatever it is that prompted the part to come up in the first place. Finally, ask the part to step back, give you some space, or to take a break.

When asking the part to step back, you are asking it to unblend from True Self. By doing so, True Self you is now in control and the part has become either the copilot or it has taken a break. You will notice that the emotions, body sensations, or thoughts associated with the part, have now become less. They might even be gone if the part took a break. But at the very least, the feelings will be less significant than they were moments ago.

By unblending, you are able to see the situation that prompted the part to come up differently. You can look at it from a different perspective. No longer from the perspective of the part.

When you unblend from the parts of you that take over and have them help True Self instead of taking over for True Self, you begin to see things from a different perspective. Not from the perspective of the part that is clouded by past programming, limiting beliefs, and societal norms and pressures.

When we align with our True Self energy

identify and work with our parts, we are building our self-worth, and connecting with the Universe. That right there are some powerful New Year’s rituals!

None of that “just think positive”, “good vibes only”, or “love and light” when feeling some type of way. No spiritual bypassing. These things only invalidate our parts.

It is about you living in alignment with who you were meant to be. How you were meant to show up on this planet.

Free from limiting beliefs, societal norms, pressures from loved ones, and negative self-talk, that chip away at your self-worth until you don’t even know who you really are. So, maybe it’s time to let these things go. Use this New Year’s to release what has been holding you back. Then you can begin anew!

New Year’s Ritual- Let Go of what no longer serves you

To let go of what is holding you back, you can write down the things the parts of you are saying to you. Allow them to let it all out, without judgment, or invalidating them. Just hold space for them, while in True Self energy, and write it all down. When you have it all on paper, ask the parts if they would join you in a releasing ceremony. This can be taking the paper and burning it-in a safe, fire-proof receptacle, tearing it up and disposing of it, burying it. Whatever feels right to the parts. Just ask and listen to what they want. Personally, my parts are big fans of fire! They love to burn things, so this is the way we often let things go. Either figuratively in my mind’s eye with a big bonfire, or literally with flame to paper.

New Year’s Rituals- Put It All Together and Put It out Into The Universe

This New year’s ritual can be done on New Year’s Eve if you are doing these rituals in the days leading up to New Year’s.

After you align with your True Self energy, choose your word of the year, and set your intentions, I would like you to do one more thing:

Take a few minutes for you.

Gather your list of Intentions and Word of the Year.

Pick a spot that suits you.

Light an incense, or a candle if you have either, or both.

Then get quiet.

-Take a few deep breaths.

-Release any tension with each exhale.

Align with your True Self energy, asking any parts that come up to step aside.

Read your Word of the Year.

**Notice what feelings it evokes.**

Do the same with your Intentions.

-Read each one and sit with the feelings around each intention.

Remember, if you notice anything other than the 8 C’s coming up, it’s a part. Ask it to step aside for a few minutes, then go back to the list.

This is how you align with your True Self and the Universe.

You are using your True Self energy to communicate with the Universe how you want to live your life moving forward in the new year. But also by sitting with the positive emotions your word of the year and intentions evoke, you are solidifying it into your subconscious, allowing yourself to believe that this is your reality.

You, my dear, are manifesting!

This is how it’s done!

These New Year’s rituals help you align with your True Self, and use that energy to be guided to choosing your word of the year, intentions, and then meditate on these evoking the positive feelings they bring up. This is to solidify how you want 2025 to look like, allowing your internal world, aka: your parts, to know it is safe to have these things, as well as communicating what you desire to the Universe to bring it all in. Keep your word of the year and intentions somewhere you will see them as a reminder. Then take aligned action towards them, unblending with any parts that come up and try to block or sabotage your aligned actions.
